The franchise began play as the Seattle SuperSonics, an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1967–68 season. The SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 after a settlement was reached between the team’s former owner and the city of Seattle. The Thunder thus became the fourth NBA franchise to relocate in the past decade.

In their inaugural season in Oklahoma City, the Thunder posted a league-best record of 60–22, winning the Northwest Division and ultimately reaching the Western Conference Finals, where they lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in five games. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden were all drafted by the Thunder in the first round of the NBA draft within the span of three years between 2007 and 2009. The team’s young core helped lead Oklahoma City to four division titles, two conference finals appearances, and one NBA Finals appearance in 2012, where they lost to the Miami Heat in five games.

Since their formation, the Thunder have won six division titles (2010–13, 2014–16) and made eleven playoff appearances. They have also set numerous franchise records: Kevin Durant became the youngest player ever to win an NBA scoring title at age 23; Russell Westbrook became the only player other than Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for an entire season; and James Harden was named the Sixth Man of the Year in 2012, becoming just the second player in NBA history to win that award with the Thunder.
